Different Types of Fishing Waders

Fishing waders are an essential tool for anglers who fish in cold, wet environments. They help to keep your feet dry while also providing a layer of insulation to protect you from the elements. There are a few different types of waders that you can choose from, each with its own advantages and disadvantages depending on the type of fishing you do.

BREATHABLE WADERS

Breathable waders are made of nylon or polyester materials with a waterproof membrane, which allows any perspiration to escape while still keeping the water out. These are great for warm days on the water, although they will require you to wear an insulating base layer underneath them to stay comfortable. They are also prone to punctures and tears, particularly in stress areas like the knees and seat, so some manufacturers offer reinforced areas on their breathable models.

WATERPROOF RUBBER WADERS

Waterproof rubber waders come up to the knee and are a good option for fishing in cold, wet conditions. They provide excellent traction, which is helpful while walking on the riverbank or through the brush to get to your favorite fishing spot. However, they are not as breathable as neoprene waders and can be somewhat heavy.

Felt soled waders offer superior traction in muddy conditions, but they are not as durable as rubber and can erode over time. Some state fisheries prohibit the use of felt soled waders, so be sure to check with them before purchasing a pair.

ADVANTAGES OF FIBERGLASS WADERS

Fiberglass waders are lighter and more flexible than vinyl, making them a better choice for warm weather or windy conditions. They are typically less expensive than other types of waders as well.

ADVANTAGES OF GORE-TEX WADERS

Most premium waders are built with a Gore-Tex membrane, which is highly breathable while still being water-resistant. The membrane is supported by backer fabric that varies in quality, which affects both the breathability and durability of the overall wader.

ADVANTAGES OF KNEE HIGH WADERS

Knee-high waders are an affordable and convenient way to stay dry while fishing. They don’t cover your legs as far as standard waders, so you will need to wear shorter pants underneath them if you plan on doing any hiking. Some brands of knee-high waders also feature front pockets that can be useful for storing things like tippet boxes and handwarmers.

ADVANTAGES OF STANDARD WADERS

Standard waders cover your chest to just below the knee and are held up with suspender-type straps that go over your shoulders. They’re not as insulated as other options and will require you to wear thicker pants underneath them, but they are lightweight and flexible enough for most anglers. They’re also prone to punctures and tears, so be careful when navigating thorny or brushy areas.
