A fishing museum is more than just a place to see stuffed fish in glass cases. It’s a treasure trove of local history that weaves an intricate story about how fishing has sculpted the character and prosperity of the Destin area.

From the techniques of ancient Indian fishing to modern day fishing rodeos, the Destin History and Fishing Museum chronicles all the milestones along the way. You’ll enjoy the museum’s nostalgic ambiance of early 1900s, complete with a replicated kitchen, oil lamps and washboards that provide a humbling glimpse into our community’s past.

The IGFA museum is sure to appeal to fishermen and non-fishermen alike, with interactive exhibits that are bound to keep visitors entertained for hours. The museum is the repository for and conservator of the world’s largest collection of angling and angling-related items, including rods, reels, flies, artwork, manuscripts, photographs and other artifacts. The IGFA also maintains the legendary book of world record game fishes, and is a driving force in education with such initiatives as catch and release.

You’ll find the largest fishing lure collection in the world at this museum, a collection that’s owned by Karl White and his wife Beverly. They have over 40,000 items neatly organized in cases and other displays. The most interesting finds include a set of bass lures made from nut shells and the only existing set of ophthalmologist’s eye glasses that were melted down to make metal lips on lures.

If you’re not a big fan of museums, the History of Fishing Museum may not be for you. But if you like high definition photographs backed up by articles telling the stories behind the images, you’ll find plenty to appreciate here.
