To get started with resetting your zippo, remove the wick and flint from the inner tube of the lighter, and take the flint out completely. Then clean it off using rubbing alcohol or a cleaning agent to remove any gunk stuck inside. Then wipe it down, and make sure the felt backing piece is pushed down as far as it can go. Then pack over it with cotton, and use a poking tool to jam it in tight.

Step 4: Resetting the Flint

Once the flint is clean and dry you can start resetting it. To reset it, place it in the inner tube and screw it in a few turns until you hear the click. If it still won’t spark then the flint may have expanded and you’ll need to replace it.

When you’re ready to re-fuel your zippo, dribble some fuel on the wick and let it light up for a couple seconds. This gets a little heat in and also speeds the drawing up action in the wick, shortening the’sitting time’ before you can put it back to use.
